Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS01:21

Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS

Pharmacological therapies for IBS-C are designed to alleviate abdominal discomfort and enhance bowel function. In patients with IBS-C, fiber supplements may help soften stools and decrease straining, but may also lead to increased gas production and bloating. Osmotic laxatives like milk of magnesia are frequently used to soften stools and increase stool frequency in IBS-C patients. In addition, two drugs approved for use in severe IBS-C adult cases are linaclotide (Linzess) and lubiprostone...
Herniated Intervertebral Disc l: Introduction01:29

Herniated Intervertebral Disc l: Introduction

Intervertebral disc herniation refers to the displacement of the nucleus pulposus (the gel-like inner core of the disc) through a tear or weakened area in the annulus fibrosus (the outer fibrous ring). The displaced disc material extends beyond the normal boundaries of the disc space and may compress or irritate nearby spinal nerve roots or, less commonly, the spinal cord.Etiology and Risk FactorsHerniation commonly results from degeneration, in which aging reduces disc hydration and...

Summary

Physically demanding jobs are linked to increased episodes of low back pain (LBP) and work absenteeism. These findings highlight the need for better LBP assessment and prevention in occupational health.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders

Background:

  • Work-related low back pain (LBP) is often attributed to occupational physical demands.
  • Understanding the relationship between physical job requirements, LBP, and absenteeism is crucial for workplace health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between occupational physical demands, LBP occurrence, and work absenteeism.
  • To analyze the impact of different physical work levels on LBP episodes and absence from work.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was administered to 735 workers assessing socio-demographics, general health, LBP history (episodes, severity, intensity), and physical job demands.
  • Workers were categorized based on their physical activity levels at work (sedentary, low/moderate, high).

Main Results:

  • 69% of workers reported at least one LBP episode in the past year.
  • Workers in physically demanding jobs showed a significantly higher absenteeism rate (4%) compared to sedentary workers.
  • High physical work demands were associated with increased odds of experiencing more than 3 LBP episodes annually (p<0.05) and higher probability of LBP-related absence (OR=3.12).

Conclusions:

  • A significant association exists between highly physically demanding occupations, low back pain, and absenteeism.
  • Findings support the enhancement of LBP assessment and prevention strategies within Occupational Health Services.
