Summary

Bacteria have unique sugar structures on their surfaces that vary between species and strains. These sugars can be recognized by proteins, which play roles in interactions with host cells, bacteriophages, and biofilm formation. Recent studies have developed microarray platforms to explore these bacterial glycans and their interactions with glycan-binding proteins. These platforms allow for high-throughput and sensitive analysis using small sample amounts. Researchers have used antibody and lectin microarrays to identify bacterial glycosignatures and differentiate strains. Microarrays with bacterial carbohydrates have also been used to study interactions with immune proteins and phage lysins. These methods support vaccine development by identifying antigenic determinants. The review highlights the current state of microarray technologies and their future potential in microbial glycobiology.
