Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

704
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)

756
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) serves as the primary classification system for mental health disorders, providing standardized diagnostic criteria for clinicians and researchers. First published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1952, the DSM has undergone several revisions to reflect evolving psychiatric understanding. The fifth edition, DSM-5, released in 2013, introduced key updates that expanded diagnostic categories and modified diagnostic...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) has been a cornerstone in studying neuropsychiatric symptoms for 25 years.
  • It is crucial for understanding behavioral changes in neurodegenerative conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the historical development and application of the NPI.
  • To highlight its utility in research and clinical settings.

Main Methods:

  • The NPI uses a structured format with 10 (or 12) items, assessing frequency and severity.
  • It has demonstrated validity and reliability across numerous studies.
  • The instrument is available in approximately 40 languages with multiple versions for diverse clinical needs.

Main Results:

  • NPI studies reveal distinct behavioral symptom profiles across different neurological disorders.
  • The NPI has been instrumental in approximately 350 clinical trials.
  • It effectively quantifies the economic burden of behavioral symptoms in dementias.

Conclusions:

  • The NPI is an indispensable tool for evaluating behavioral changes in Alzheimer disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Its widespread use underscores its significance in clinical practice and research.
