Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

215
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

4.1K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching III: Evaluation and Documentation

2.4K
Evaluation of the teaching process enables the nurse to determine if the patient's learning needs were met and if training was effective. If the expected outcomes are not met, the care plan is revised, and additional education or reinforcement is provided. Nurses can ask questions after the session or obtain feedback to assess the patient's understanding of the topic.
Nurses can use several methods to evaluate patient outcomes. For example, oral questions can assess cognitive learning,...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

43.4K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Social Foundations of Self III: Self-Evaluation01:30

Social Foundations of Self III: Self-Evaluation

148
Self-evaluation is the process by which individuals assess their abilities, behaviors, and characteristics based on feedback from others. Charles H. Cooley observed that a person’s self-perception is primarily influenced by how others see and judge them. He suggested that individuals form their identities based on their interpretations of others' reactions. As a result, social interactions play a crucial role in shaping self-esteem and personal identity. These external evaluations often...

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Occupational Health
  • Public Health Policy

Background:

  • Public sector employees nearing retirement often face challenges transitioning to post-work life.
  • Effective retirement preparation programs (RPPs) are crucial for maintaining well-being and quality of life.
  • Understanding the impact of RPPs on work-related attitudes and life quality is essential for supporting the aging workforce.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a retirement preparation program (RPP).
  • To assess changes in retirement planning behaviors, the meaning of work, and quality of life among public workers.
  • To identify specific program components that positively influence participants' pre-retirement transition.

Main Methods:

  • Quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-test evaluation.
  • Non-equivalent control group (n=82): 50 in the experimental group (EG) and 32 in the control group (CG).
  • Utilized validated scales for retirement planning behaviors, meaningful work, and WHOQOL-Brief for quality of life assessment.

Main Results:

  • The experimental group (EG) demonstrated significant increases in socio-occupational investment and work coherence/expressiveness.
  • Post-program assessment revealed improvements in the EG's quality of life related to the environment.
  • Comparative analysis showed higher socio-occupational investment and perceived social utility of work in the EG during follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • The retirement preparation program positively impacted participants' work-related attitudes and quality of life.
  • RPPs can be valuable interventions for supporting public workers' transition into retirement.
  • Findings support the development of targeted health policies to address the needs of an aging population.
