Genetic factors partially explain the link between poor sleep quality and chronic neck pain (NP). This twin study found that while both issues are linked, shared genetic influences play a role in their association.
Area of Science:
- Twin studies
- Genetics
- Sleep science
- Pain research
Background:
- Sleep quality and chronic neck pain (NP) are known to be associated.
- Genetic influences on this association have not been previously explored.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the genetic and environmental influences on the association between sleep quality and chronic NP.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from 2,328 individual twins from the Murcia Twin Registry (Spain).
- Employed bidirectional cotwin logistic regression analysis, assessing sleep quality as exposure and NP as outcome, and vice versa.
- Conducted analysis in two stages: total sample analysis and within-pair twin case-control analysis.
Main Results:
- Poor sleep quality was significantly associated with chronic NP (OR: 1.09 in total sample, OR: 1.10 in cotwin analysis).
- Chronic NP was significantly associated with poor sleep quality (OR: 1.80 in total sample, OR: 1.63 in cotwin analysis).
- Associations were significant in dizygotic twin pairs but not in monozygotic pairs, suggesting partial genetic confounding.
Conclusions:
- The association between sleep quality and chronic NP is partially confounded by genetic factors.
- Findings highlight the complex interplay between genetic predispositions, sleep disturbances, and chronic pain conditions.
