Summary

Antibiotics do not prevent alveolitis after erupted tooth extractions. This study found no benefit in using antibiotics to reduce the incidence of dry socket following dental procedures.

  • Alveolitis, commonly known as dry socket, is a painful postoperative complication following tooth extractions.
  • The prophylactic use of antibiotics to prevent alveolitis is a debated topic in dental practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of antibiotic use in preventing alveolitis after erupted tooth extractions.
  • To identify potential patient-related factors associated with alveolitis development.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 418 patients undergoing erupted tooth extractions across three centers.
  • Review of patient medical records to assess antibiotic usage and postoperative outcomes.
  • Comparison of alveolitis incidence between patients who received antibiotics and those who did not.

Main Results:

  • A total of 12 cases of alveolitis were reported (2.87% incidence).
  • The incidence of alveolitis was similar in patients who received antibiotics (2.14%) and those who did not (4.35%).
  • No significant association was found between patient characteristics and alveolitis development.
