Preclinical Development: Overview01:28

Preclinical Development: Overview

5.7K
Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...

Longitudinal Research

13.0K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

25.3K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Summary

Research priorities for very preterm (VPT) birth outcomes were developed using a Delphi process. Key areas include education, care for extremely preterm infants, growth, and socioemotional well-being for children and parents.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatal research
  • Pediatric outcomes
  • Public health

Background:

  • The RECAP Preterm platform aggregates data from 23 European cohorts of very preterm (VPT) births.
  • Understanding the long-term consequences of VPT birth is crucial for improving care and outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish research priorities concerning the consequences of very preterm birth.
  • To inform the research agenda for the RECAP Preterm platform.

Main Methods:

  • A two-round modified Delphi consensus process was employed.
  • An international multidisciplinary stakeholder panel ranked 28 research themes related to childhood outcomes.
  • Feedback and new theme suggestions were incorporated in the second round.

Main Results:

  • Sixty-four stakeholders from 17 countries participated.
  • Top-ranked themes included education, care/outcomes of extremely preterm births, growth, nutrition, emotional well-being, social inclusion, parental stress, and social circumstances.
  • Consensus was observed across diverse professional and personal backgrounds.

Conclusions:

  • A comprehensive set of research priorities for VPT birth consequences was identified.
  • Strong consensus emerged on key areas, particularly socioemotional needs of children and parents.
  • These findings highlight under-researched aspects requiring further investigation.
