Spontaneous breathing anesthesia (SBA) is a feasible alternative for cervical tracheal resection and reconstruction (TRR). This technique offers potential advantages over general anesthesia for select patients undergoing TRR.
Area of Science:
- Anesthesiology
- Thoracic Surgery
Background:
- General anesthesia for cervical tracheal resection and reconstruction (TRR) presents challenges, including endotracheal intubation complications.
- Spontaneous breathing anesthesia (SBA) may offer an alternative with potential benefits.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of SBA for cervical TRR.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study of 35 patients undergoing cervical TRR from May 2015 to March 2019.
- Anesthesia involved intravenous sedation and ultrasound-guided bilateral superficial cervical plexus block (CPB).
Main Results:
- 32 patients had tracheal tumors, 3 had post-intubation tracheal stenosis.
- 29 patients maintained stable spontaneous breathing after airway opening.
- 1 patient required high-frequency jet ventilation, and 1 required anesthesia conversion.
Conclusions:
- Spontaneous breathing anesthesia is a viable option for cervical TRR.
- SBA can serve as an alternative anesthetic technique for specific patient populations undergoing TRR.
