    Summary

    Computerized tomographic mammography (CTM) shows promise for breast cancer detection, though conventional mammography currently identifies more malignant lesions. Further research is needed, especially with contrast material.

    Background:

    • Conventional mammography is a standard breast cancer screening tool.
    • Computerized tomographic mammography (CTM) is an emerging imaging technique.
    • Direct comparison studies between CTM and mammography are limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report initial clinical findings of the first study using computerized tomographic mammography (CTM).
    • To compare the diagnostic accuracy of CTM versus conventional mammography in detecting breast lesions.
    • To evaluate CTM performance with and without contrast material.

    Main Methods:

    • An initial clinical study was conducted comparing CTM and conventional mammography.
    • 160 breast lesions (100 benign, 60 malignant) were analyzed from CTM without contrast.
    • 79 breast lesions (46 benign, 33 malignant) were analyzed from CTM with contrast material.

    Main Results:

    • Without contrast, mammography identified 54/60 malignant lesions, while CTM identified 41/60. Five lesions were missed by both.
    • With contrast, mammography identified 28/33 malignant lesions, while CTM identified 27/33. One lesion was missed by both.
    • CTM performance, particularly with contrast, requires further investigation.

    Conclusions:

    • This initial report highlights the early experience with CTM in breast lesion detection.
    • Conventional mammography demonstrated higher sensitivity for malignant lesions in this preliminary study.
    • Further studies are planned to expand experience with contrast-enhanced CTM for improved breast cancer diagnosis.
