A rare gastric hyperplastic polyp caused severe stomach distension and duodenal obstruction in a horse. This finding is the first reported case in equine medicine and offers comparative insights.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Equine Medicine
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Gastric polyps are uncommon in horses.
  • Complete duodenal obstruction and gastric distension are critical clinical signs.

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old castrated male Arabian horse presented with severe gastric distension.
  • A large, 20 cm pedunculated mass was identified at the gastric pylorus, obstructing the proximal duodenum.

Findings:

  • Histological diagnosis revealed a gastric hyperplastic polyp.
  • This represents the first documented case of a gastric hyperplastic polyp in a horse.

Implications:

  • This case expands the differential diagnoses for gastric masses and obstructive conditions in horses.
