Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in patients diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case-control study was conducted.
  • 163 AIH patients and 1104 healthy controls were analyzed.
  • Logistic regression models assessed AIH as a risk factor for thyroid disease, analyzing hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Main Results:

  • Hypothyroidism was significantly more prevalent in AIH patients (17.7%) than controls (5%).
  • Hyperthyroidism was also more common in AIH patients (3.2%) versus controls (1.2%).
  • Multivariate analysis confirmed an independent association between AIH and hypothyroidism, but not hyperthyroidism.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid dysfunction occurs more frequently in individuals with AIH.
  • The causal relationship between AIH and thyroid dysfunction remains undetermined.
  • Routine screening for thyroid dysfunction is advised upon AIH diagnosis.
