Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of image-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT) for primary breast cancer.
  • To assess the correlation between MRI findings and histology post-PDT.
  • To determine the dose-response relationship of escalating light doses in PDT.

Main Methods:

  • A phase I/IIa dose escalation study involving 12 patients with invasive ductal breast cancer.
  • Administration of verteporfin followed by interstitial laser light delivery under ultrasound guidance.
  • Pre- and post-PDT MRI scans and histological examination of excised tissue.
