Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Social Psychology

Background:

  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with impaired social role functioning.
  • Coping styles and gender may influence BPD symptom presentation and functional outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mediating role of coping styles in the relationship between BPD symptoms and social role dysfunction.
  • To examine if gender moderates the association between BPD symptoms, coping styles, and social role dysfunction.

Main Methods:

  • Moderated mediation analysis was used.
  • 233 outpatients with personality dysfunction completed measures of BPD symptoms, coping styles, and social role dysfunction.

Main Results:

  • For women with BPD, emotion-oriented and social diversion-oriented coping styles mediated the link between BPD symptoms and social dysfunction.
  • Coping styles did not mediate this association for men with BPD.
  • Emotion-oriented coping was positively associated with social dysfunction, while social diversion coping was negatively associated.

Conclusions:

  • Gender-specific coping mechanisms influence social role functioning in individuals with BPD.
  • Interventions promoting healthy social engagement and support networks may benefit women with BPD.
  • Targeting coping strategies in therapy could mitigate social dysfunction in BPD.
