Effects of modifying interpretation bias on transdiagnostic repetitive negative thinking

Cognitive bias modification of interpretations (CBM-I) effectively reduces repetitive negative thinking (RNT), including worry and rumination. Enhancing emotional engagement in CBM-I further improved outcomes for some participants.

- The enhanced CBM-I showed greater improvements in interpretations and reduced negative intrusions immediately post-training, and reduced trait rumination at follow-up, but did not enhance effects on anxiety or depression.

- Interpretation bias plays a role in maintaining transdiagnostic RNT.
- Internet-based CBM-I is a viable approach for reducing longer-term RNT.
- Enhancing emotional engagement in CBM-I may offer additional benefits for specific RNT components.
