Background:

  • Emergency medicine (EM) residents typically receive insufficient sex- and gender-specific medical education.
  • There is a growing emphasis on addressing this educational gap, particularly as undergraduate medical curricula evolve.
  • Sex and Gender in Medicine (SGM) is an emerging field with critical implications for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and pilot a Sex and Gender in Emergency Medicine (SGEM) toolkit for residency programs.
  • To assess the impact of a 3-hour SGM training session on EM residents' knowledge and perceived practice needs.
  • To provide a scalable educational model for integrating SGM into EM residency training.

Main Methods:

  • A toolkit with SGM educational components was developed by the SGEM Interest Group.
  • The toolkit was piloted across four EM residency programs, involving a 3-hour training session (case discussions, oral boards, simulation).
  • Pre- and post-training assessments measured resident demographics, prior SGM training, and knowledge, with 82 residents participating (47% response rate).

Main Results:

  • The majority of participating residents reported minimal prior SGM training during medical school and residency.
  • The training significantly improved knowledge, with average assessment scores increasing from 61% pre-training to 88% post-training.
  • Post-training, 74% of residents felt medical school training in SGM would have been beneficial, and 83% felt residency training would have been beneficial.

Conclusions:

  • EM residents generally have limited exposure to sex and gender-based medicine (SGBM) during their training.
  • The piloted SGEM initiative offers a replicable model for incorporating SGBM education into EM residency programs.
  • Participants strongly indicated a need for enhanced SGBM education to benefit their clinical practice.
