Embedded health engagement teams (EHETs) offer advantages over traditional methods for health security cooperation. Culturally competent, small EHETs improve mutual benefit and health outcomes for the U.S. Department of Defense and partners.
Area of Science:
- Global Health Security
- Military Medicine
- International Health Engagement
Background:
- Traditional health engagement methods often lack cultural competence and embedded capacity.
- Existing approaches may not fully achieve desired military objectives or optimal health outcomes.
- There is a need for improved strategies in health security cooperation and humanitarian assistance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To define a prototype for effective embedded health engagement teams (EHETs).
- To compare the EHET concept with historical health engagement units.
- To prospectively test the EHET model in real-world deployments.
Main Methods:
- Defining the characteristics of an ideal EHET (e.g., size, skills, cultural competence).
- Reviewing and comparing EHET concept against prior military health engagement units.
- Planning prospective testing and evaluation of the prototype EHET.
Main Results:
- EHETs offer enhanced capability, capacity building, and trust through cultural expertise.
- Embedded teams provide a platform for enduring relationships and host nation legitimacy.
- EHETs allow for flexible and targeted interventions with greater fidelity.
Conclusions:
- Small, culturally competent, and embedded EHETs are superior to traditional methods.
- EHETs achieve greater mutual benefit, military objectives, and improved health outcomes.
- The proposed EHET model requires further definition, comparison, and prospective testing.
