Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Developmental Biology

Background:

  • Heterotopic thyroid tissue refers to thyroid tissue found outside its normal location.
  • Cardiac anomalies can arise from embryological developmental abnormalities.
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting is a common surgical procedure for heart disease.

Observation:

  • An elderly female patient undergoing coronary arterial aortic saphenous vein bypass grafting incidentally presented with an unusual finding.
  • Thyroid tissue was discovered within the wall of the right atrium.

Findings:

  • The presence of heterotopic thyroid tissue in the right atrial wall is presumed to be a result of an embryological developmental abnormality.
  • This case represents only the third documented instance of thyroid heterotopia affecting the heart.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare developmental anomalies in cardiac surgery.
  • Further research into the embryological origins of cardiac heterotopia may provide insights into congenital heart conditions.
  • Documenting such rare cases contributes to a better understanding of ectopic thyroid tissue prevalence and behavior.
