Background:

Periodontitis is a common oral infection in elderly individuals.
Systemic diseases and their treatments may influence periodontitis prevalence and severity.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the frequency of systemic drug use in elderly patients with and without periodontitis.
To explore the association between medication consumption and periodontitis severity.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 1221 elderly patients was divided into periodontitis (n=608) and healthy (n=613) groups.
Systemic conditions, medications, and periodontal status were recorded and analyzed using logistic regression.

Main Results:

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and antidepressants were most common. Higher frequencies of ACE inhibitors, antidepressants, oral hypoglycemic agents, calcium channel blockers (CCB), insulin, and diuretics were observed in the periodontitis group.
Medication intake frequency showed a severity-dependent association, particularly for oral hypoglycemic agents, CCB, and anticonvulsants in severe periodontitis cases.

Conclusions:

Elderly patients with periodontitis exhibit a higher frequency of medications for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
The findings suggest a potential relationship between systemic diseases, their treatments, and the development or progression of periodontitis.
