Epistaxis01:30

Epistaxis

461
Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.
Etiology
Possible causes of this condition include high blood pressure, trauma, low humidity, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, foreign bodies, nasal inhalation of corticosteroids or illicit drugs, excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, facial or nasal surgery, anatomic malformation, tumors, or systemic...

Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway01:29

Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway

2.5K
Nasopharyngeal suctioning is a procedure to remove secretions from the upper part of the respiratory tract that the patient cannot clear independently. It helps maintain airway patency and prevents complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

Tracheostomy Decannulation01:21

Tracheostomy Decannulation

936
Tracheostomy decannulation is a significant milestone in the liberation of mechanically ventilated patients. Despite its importance, there is no universally accepted protocol for this procedure. This demands an evidence-based, individualized approach.
Description of the Procedure
Decannulation refers to the permanent removal of the tracheostomy tube, signaling the resolution of the condition that initially necessitated the tracheostomy. The process requires a well-coordinated interplay between...

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation II: ACLS Airway Management

430
Airway management is a key skill in emergency and critical care settings, as maintaining a clear airway is essential for adequate oxygenation and ventilation.Head Tilt-Chin Lift TechniqueThe head tilt-chin lift maneuver is an essential technique primarily used in patients without suspected cervical spine injuries. To perform this maneuver, one hand is placed on the patient’s forehead, and gentle pressure is applied backward to tilt the head. The fingertips of the other hand are positioned...

Administering Oxygen by Nasal Cannula01:29

Administering Oxygen by Nasal Cannula

2.1K
Oxygen therapy is critical to patient care, especially for those struggling with respiratory issues. This intervention increases the oxygen concentration in the lungs, enhancing the amount of oxygen transported to the body's tissues. One standard method of delivering supplemental oxygen is through a nasal cannula, a non-invasive device that provides low to medium oxygen concentrations.
Nasal Cannulas
A nasal cannula is a lightweight tube split into two prongs placed in the nostrils,...

Summary

Nasal valve (NV) insufficiency is an underrecognized complication of Mohs surgery. Awareness of NV anatomy and function assessment can prevent and manage this issue, reducing patient morbidity.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Nasal valve (NV) insufficiency is an infrequent complication of Mohs micrographic surgery.
  • Limited literature addresses NV insufficiency in the context of cutaneous oncology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review literature on NV insufficiency related to Mohs surgery.
  • Characterize causes, prevalence, evaluation, and management of NV insufficiency.

Main Methods:

  • PubMed search conducted for relevant articles.
  • Included studies on NV, Mohs surgery, cutaneous oncology, and reconstruction.

Main Results:

  • NV insufficiency can occur during tumor removal or reconstruction.
  • Risk factors include large defects (>1 cm), specific locations (ala, sidewall, alar crease), lack of support, and poor flap planning.
  • Surgical techniques exist for prevention and correction.

Conclusions:

  • NV insufficiency may be underrecognized and underreported after Mohs surgery.
  • Simple tests can identify NV insufficiency.
  • Understanding NV anatomy and preoperative assessment are crucial for prevention and management, reducing patient morbidity.
