Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine hearing preservation rates in cochlear implant (CI) recipients aged 72 years and older.
  • To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of hearing preservation in an elderly cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series conducted at a tertiary otology/neurotology practice.
  • Analysis of 24 cochlear implant recipients aged 72 years and older, implanted between April 2017 and June 2018.
  • Hearing levels were measured preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively.

Main Results:

  • 60% of elderly CI recipients achieved at least one postoperative hearing threshold ≤85 dB HL.
  • Over 80% of these patients successfully utilized an electroacoustic map (MAP) post-implantation.

  • Elderly CI recipients can benefit from hearing preservation, leading to successful electroacoustic rehabilitation.
