Summary

First-time lumbar microdiscectomy significantly improves Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores and quality of life for patients with lumbar disc herniation. This effective and safe surgical procedure demonstrates favorable outcomes with a low complication rate.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes and complication rates of first-time lumbar microdiscectomy.
  • To assess the impact of microdiscectomy on patient disability and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective data from 1219 patients undergoing first-time lumbar microdiscectomy were analyzed.
  • Outcomes included changes in Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), EuroQol 5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), and pain scores at 1 year.
  • Perioperative complications within 3 months were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvement in mean ODI score (33.3 points) and EQ-5D (0.52 points) at 1 year post-surgery.
