Background:

  • Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a common refractive surgery.
  • Femtosecond lasers are used for corneal flap creation in LASIK.
  • Ocular trauma can compromise corneal integrity.

Observation:

  • Two patients with prior uneventful femtosecond LASIK experienced severe open globe injuries.
  • Primary surgical repair of the globe injuries was performed.
  • LASIK flap stability was assessed during surgical repair and via histopathology.

Findings:

  • No LASIK flap dislocation was observed in either patient during globe repair.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed an intact LASIK flap in one case.
  • The femtosecond LASIK flap remained stable despite severe corneal trauma.

Implications:

  • Femtosecond LASIK flaps demonstrate significant stability even after major ocular trauma.
  • The presence of a femtosecond LASIK flap did not complicate the management of severe eye injuries.
  • LASIK flap integrity did not negatively impact best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) post-trauma.
