Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Microbiology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Pseudomonas keratitis is a severe ocular infection.
  • Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent vision loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of gentamicin sulfate against Pseudomonas keratitis.
  • To determine optimal prophylactic treatment regimens before ocular trauma.

Main Methods:

  • An experimental Pseudomonas keratitis model was used in 50 rabbit eyes.
  • Four different prophylactic gentamicin sulfate regimens were tested.
  • Control eyes received saline; all eyes were inoculated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa after corneal scratching.

Main Results:

  • All control eyes became infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Low infection rates were observed in all four experimental groups treated prophylactically.
  • Gentamicin sulfate demonstrated significant protective effects.
  • Conclusions:

    • Prophylactic application of gentamicin sulfate is effective in preventing Pseudomonas keratitis.
    • Early antibiotic administration prior to ocular trauma is a viable preventative strategy.
