Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Radial keratotomy (RK) is a refractive surgical procedure to correct myopia.
  • Reoperations for RK can present unique challenges in corneal wound healing.

Observation:

  • A 21-year-old male developed Pseudomonas aeruginosa keratitis 23 months post-RK reoperation.
  • The corneal ulcer specifically formed at an inferior incision site.

Findings:

  • The keratitis was presumed to be linked to compromised epithelial healing at the RK incision.
  • Early and aggressive treatment with fortified antibiotics was administered.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential long-term complication of radial keratotomy.
  • Effective management of Pseudomonas aeruginosa keratitis can lead to favorable visual outcomes.
