Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

216
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Metacognition01:26

Metacognition

522
Metacognition is a conscious process where individuals are aware of their cognitive and executive processes, such as planning before solving a problem or self-monitoring during reading. For instance, a writer may need help with composing a piece. The situation involves a writer who is working on a piece of writing, but while doing so, they realize that something is missing. They notice that their characters lack depth or details. This realization occurs because the writer is reflecting on their...

High-Level and Low-Level Awareness

570
Controlled processes in human consciousness represent high-alert mental states where individuals deliberately focus their attention on achieving specific goals. Controlled processes can be seen in situations like mastering new technology, where a person might become so absorbed that they ignore surrounding distractions. Such processes involve selective attention, requiring one to concentrate on particular elements of experience while disregarding others. These are governed by executive...

Dimensions of Health and Illness

9.6K
The factors influencing the health-illness continuum can be internal or external and may or may not be under conscious control. They are related to the following eight human dimensions, and each dimension is interrelated to one other.

Major Somatic Sensory Pathways01:28

Major Somatic Sensory Pathways

2.2K
Sensory impulses related to touch, pressure, vibration, and proprioception from various body parts, such as the limbs, trunk, neck, and posterior head, travel to the cerebral cortex through the posterior column-medial lemniscus pathway. The pathway’s name derives from the two white-matter tracts that convey the impulses: the spinal cord's posterior column and the brainstem's medial lemniscus. First-order sensory neurons extend their axons into the spinal cord, forming the...

Physiological Barriers01:25

Physiological Barriers

4.9K
Physiological barriers are semi-permeable cellular structures restricting drug diffusion into intracellular compartments and tissues. There are six types of physiological barriers: blood endothelial, cell membrane, blood-brain, blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood-placenta, and blood-testis barriers.
The blood endothelial barrier is the most porous of these. It allows all small ionized, un-ionized, and lipophilic molecules to pass through the endothelial lining into the interstitial space...

    Summary

Most Americans have medium to high physical activity knowledge, but awareness of specific guidelines and dosage recommendations is very low. Socioeconomic factors significantly impact knowledge and awareness, highlighting a need for targeted health promotion.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Health Behavior
    • Health Promotion

    Background:

    • Research was conducted by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion to identify factors influencing adherence to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
    • The study focused on understanding demographic characteristics associated with knowledge and awareness of these guidelines.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the knowledge and awareness of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans among adult physical activity contemplators.
    • To examine demographic variations in understanding physical activity recommendations and guideline awareness.

    Main Methods:

    • An online survey was administered to 2050 adult physical activity contemplators.
    • Data collected included knowledge of physical activity, guideline awareness, and dosage recommendation knowledge.
    • Statistical analyses, including Pearson chi-square and Fisher exact tests, were used to analyze demographic differences.

    Main Results:

    • Respondents demonstrated medium to high general physical activity knowledge, but this varied by socioeconomic status.
    • Knowledge of specific dosage recommendations for moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity was very low (2% and 3% respectively).
    • Only 22% of respondents were aware of the guidelines, with higher awareness among individuals with greater education, higher income, or no disability.

    Conclusions:

    • Findings informed the development of the Move Your Way campaign by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
    • The study underscores the necessity of increasing awareness of physical activity guidelines and promoting behavior change, especially among lower socioeconomic groups.
