Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. Background:

Malaria has historically posed a significant public health challenge in China.
Understanding long-term epidemic trends is essential for effective control strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the long-term epidemic trends of malaria in China from 1950 to 2016.
To evaluate the feasibility of achieving malaria eradication by 2020.
To predict future malaria cases and deaths.

Main Methods:

Data on malaria incidence and mortality were extracted from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention.
Joinpoint and Poisson regression models were employed to analyze trends and make predictions.
Epidemic trends were assessed by sex, age, and spatial distribution.

Main Results:

A dramatic decrease in malaria burden was observed, with an annual incidence decrease of -11.4% and mortality decrease of -8.7%.
From 1950 to 2016, over 227 million cases and 36,000 deaths were reported.
Predictions for 2020 indicate a minimal number of cases (2,562) and deaths (10), with zero indigenous cases.

Conclusions:

The goal of malaria elimination by 2020 is realistic for China.
Continued routine clinical and entomological surveillance is recommended.
Special attention should be given to cross-border areas and the management of imported malaria cases.
