Summary

Octamethylsilsesquioxane (OMS) shows promise as a nonfluorinated liquid-repellent material. Films made with OMS particles exhibit excellent liquid repellency, comparable to or exceeding traditional fluorinated compounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate octamethylsilsesquioxane (OMS) as an omniphobic substance for creating nonfluorinated liquid-repellent films.
  • To compare the liquid-repellency of OMS-based films with existing materials like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

Main Methods:

  • Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) were determined for OMS through dissolution tests.
  • Composite films were fabricated using OMS particles with Ni-P and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrices.
  • Liquid-repellency and water-sliding behavior of the films were evaluated.

  • HSP analysis predicted OMS to have liquid-repellency similar to PTFE.

  • OMS-based composite films, particularly with a PDMS matrix, offer excellent liquid-repellency and are promising for sustainable surface technologies.
