Drivers nearby vehicles with automatic emergency braking (AEB) may change their behavior, even if they do not use AEB themselves. Trust in AEB influences this negative behavioral adaptation in non-users.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the belief that an approaching vehicle has Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) influences the behavior of drivers in proximity.
  • To explore negative behavioral adaptation in non-users of AEB.

Main Methods:

  • Two simulator experiments with experienced and novice drivers driving vehicles without ADAS.
  • Manipulation of participants' belief about the approaching vehicle's AEB and its time-to-arrival.
  • Measurement of braking behavior and, in Experiment 2, trust in AEB.

Main Results:

  • Belief in the approaching vehicle's AEB did not alter braking probability but delayed braking initiation.
  • This delay in braking latency was significant only when participants had higher trust in AEB (Experiment 2).

Conclusions:

  • Non-users in proximity to AEB-equipped vehicles can exhibit negative behavioral adaptation.
  • Driver trust in AEB is a critical factor influencing this adaptation.
