Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate structural brain networks in patients with remitted psychotic depression.
  • To compare brain structure between patients and healthy controls.
  • To explore relationships between brain structure and illness severity.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on 245 participants (159 healthy controls, 86 remitted psychotic depression patients).
  • Employed non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) on cortical thickness data to derive whole-brain structural covariance networks.
  • Compared structural covariance networks between patient and control groups.

Main Results:

  • Patients with remitted psychotic depression exhibited significantly thinner cortices in five structural covariance networks: insular-limbic, occipito-temporal, temporal, parahippocampal-limbic, and inferior fronto-temporal.

  • Remitted psychotic depression is associated with widespread cortical thinning across five structural brain networks.

  • Brain structure, particularly the insular-limbic network, is linked to the clinical presentation and prognosis of psychotic depression.
