Passive Filters01:27

Passive Filters

906
Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources.
Low-Pass Filters
Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff...

Active Filters01:25

Active Filters

1.2K
Active filters are electronic circuits that use operational amplifiers (op-amps), resistors, and capacitors to filter out unwanted frequency components from a signal. A first-order low-pass active filter is designed to pass signals with a frequency lower than a certain cutoff frequency and attenuate frequencies higher than that cutoff frequency. The transfer function for a first-order low-pass active filter is:

Parallel Resonance01:23

Parallel Resonance

451
The parallel RLC circuit is an arrangement where the resistor (R), inductor (L), and capacitor (C) are all connected to the same nodes and, as a result, share the same voltage across them. The parallel RLC circuit is analyzed in terms of admittance (Y), which reflects the ease with which current can flow. The admittance is given by:

Inductors01:11

Inductors

846
An inductor is a passive component built to store energy within its magnetic field. It can be fabricated by coiling a wire around a magnetic core. When current is permitted to flow through this inductor, it is observed that the voltage across the inductor is directly proportional to the time rate of change of the current. Mathematically,

Inductors01:20

Inductors

5.9K
An inductor, also known as a choke, is a circuit component created to have a specific inductance. Inductors are among the crucial circuit components used in modern electronics, along with resistors and capacitors. They serve as a barrier against changes in a circuit's current. An inductor tends to suppress current changes in an alternating-current circuit that are faster than desired. In a direct-current circuit, an inductor aids in preserving a constant current despite changes in the...

Characteristics of Series Resonant Circuit01:24

Characteristics of Series Resonant Circuit

498
Series resonance occurs in a circuit containing inductive (L), capacitive (C), and resistive (R) elements connected sequentially. At the resonance frequency, the inductive and capacitive reactances are equal in magnitude but opposite in sign, effectively canceling each other. This causes the circuit's impedance is minimal, primarily determined by the resistance R. The resonant frequency of an RLC circuit is defined as:

Area of Science:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Analog Circuit Design

Background:

  • Traditional analog filters in the kilohertz range often use resistor-capacitor (RC) elements.
  • Designing very narrow filters with high Q-factors (around 1000) using RC architectures is challenging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate a novel analog filter design utilizing a simple series inductor-capacitor (LC) resonance circuit.
  • To achieve higher selectivity than conventional active RC filters.

Main Methods:

  • Implementation of a filter based on a series LC resonance circuit.
  • Utilizing analog circuit components (inductor and capacitor).

Main Results:

  • The designed LC filter demonstrated a Q-factor of approximately 591.
  • The filter operated correctly at a resonant frequency of 4.73 kHz.
  • The LC filter exhibited greater selectivity compared to typical active RC filters.

Conclusions:

  • A simple series LC resonance circuit can be effectively used to design highly selective analog filters.
  • This LC filter design offers a viable alternative to RC-based filters for achieving high Q-factors in the kilohertz range.
