Peripheral iris retraction using argon laser photocoagulation effectively manages postoperative angle closure in retinal detachment patients. This procedure offers prompt intraocular pressure reduction and prevents chronic glaucoma.

Background:

  • Postoperative angle closure glaucoma following retinal detachment repair can be refractory to standard treatments.

Observation:

  • Twelve patients with retinal detachment and subsequent angle closure underwent peripheral iris retraction.
  • This intervention was employed when topical cycloplegics and corticosteroids proved ineffective.

Findings:

  • Argon laser peripheral iris retraction provided immediate visualization of angle structures.
  • The procedure led to a prompt reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP).
  • Only two of ten patients without prior glaucoma history required long-term medication.
