Exercise and Muscle Performance01:27

Exercise and Muscle Performance

2.2K
Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response

3.8K
Exercise significantly impacts cardiovascular response, which is crucial for understanding patient health and designing effective treatment plans.
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...

Social Foundations of Self I: Play and Game

149
The development of self in children is deeply rooted in social interactions, mainly through stages of play and structured games. These stages, outlined by sociologist George Herbert Mead, illustrate how children progressively learn to understand and adopt social roles, forming a cohesive sense of self. The Play Stage: Imitation and Simple Role-TakingIn the early years of childhood, the play stage is characterized by imitative behavior, where children engage in role-playing based on familiar...

Summary

Sport exergames can increase physical activity intentions. While usability and playability are key, players new to exergames reported higher enjoyment. Swimming intentions did not increase significantly.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Exercise Physiology

Background:

  • Exergames blend physical activity with gaming.
  • Understanding their impact on real-world participation is crucial.
  • Usability and playability influence user engagement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how sport exergame usability and playability affect intentions for physical activity and real sports.
  • To compare outcomes based on player demographics and experience.
  • To analyze the psychological factors influencing participation intentions.

Main Methods:

  • Questionnaires assessed enjoyment, usability, game-experience, and future participation intentions.
  • Comparative analysis based on gender, prior swimming, and exergame experience.
  • Statistical evaluation of psychological parameters and intention changes.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in psychological parameters between groups.
  • Players without prior exergame experience reported higher enjoyment.
  • Physical activity intentions increased across all participants; swimming intentions did not.
  • Limitations in current gaming systems may impact player experience.

Conclusions:

  • Sport exergames show potential for increasing general physical activity intentions.
  • Exergame experience influences enjoyment, with novices potentially benefiting more.
  • Targeted interventions may be needed to boost specific sport intentions like swimming.
