Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Traumatology

Background:

  • Distal ulnar fractures often occur with distal radial fractures.
  • Current treatments include plate osteosynthesis and Kirschner's wire pinning.

Observation:

  • A technique utilizing headless compression screws was applied to 11 patients with combined distal ulnar and radial fractures.
  • Patients used a short-arm splint for under two weeks post-treatment.

Findings:

  • The mean time to bony union was 6.5 weeks.
  • Excellent functional recovery was noted, with a mean Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand score of 14.6 and a mean visual analog scale score of 1.09.
  • All patients regained full range of motion without significant complications.

Implications:

  • Headless compression screws offer a minimally invasive intramedullary fixation option for distal ulnar fractures.
  • This technique promotes simple and effective bony union with a low complication rate.
  • The approach may be a valuable alternative for managing complex distal forearm fractures.
