Gallbladder

1.8K
The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that plays a crucial role in our digestive system. Measuring about 10 cm in length, it is comparable in size to a kiwi fruit and is located in a hollow area on the lower surface of the liver. The gallbladder's primary function is to store and concentrate bile, a fluid produced by the liver that aids in digestion.
The gallbladder's anatomy consists of three regions: the fundus, body, and neck. Extending from the neck, the cystic duct joins...

Area of Science:

  • Hepatobiliary imaging
  • Gastrointestinal pathology

Background:

  • Bile duct adenoma (BDA) is a rare benign biliary tumor.
  • Accurate radiologic diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify characteristic imaging features of BDA through radiologic-pathologic correlation.
  • To enhance diagnostic accuracy of BDA on medical imaging.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of pathological and imaging findings in seven BDA patients.
  • Correlation of histopathologic features with contrast-enhanced imaging characteristics.

Main Results:

  • BDAs were small (median 5.5 mm), hemispheric, and subcapsular liver lesions.
  • Imaging revealed early hypervascularity and prolonged enhancement.
  • Histopathology showed bile ductule proliferation; variations in fibrosis and inflammation were noted.

Conclusions:

  • Bile duct adenoma presents as a small, semicircular subcapsular liver lesion.
  • Characteristic imaging findings include early hypervascularity and delayed enhancement.
  • Radiologic-pathologic correlation aids in differentiating BDA from other liver lesions.
