Background:

Complexity science has been applied to healthcare organizations since the 1990s.
Traditional leadership models often view organizations as machines.
New leadership paradigms are needed to address the complexities of modern healthcare.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore three principles of complexity leadership: wholes are not just the sum of their parts, all healthcare is local, and value is the centerpiece of service delivery.
To examine these principles from "organization as machine," complexity science, and complex relational processes (CRP) perspectives.
To demonstrate how CRP can humanize complexity science metaphors for leadership.

Main Methods:

Comparative analysis of leadership perspectives.
Exploration of three core principles of complexity leadership.
Application of the Complex Relational Processes (CRP) lens.

Main Results:

The CRP lens bridges nonhuman systems metaphors with human relational skills.
CRP draws on philosophy, sociology, and psychology to humanize complexity science.
