Summary

Renal leiomyoma, a rare kidney tumor, can grow very large, causing symptoms like abdominal pain. Surgical removal is the primary treatment for these benign smooth muscle tumors.

Background:

  • Renal leiomyomas are rare benign mesenchymal tumors originating from kidney smooth muscle cells.
  • They are typically located in the renal capsule and can be asymptomatic when small.

Observation:

  • A case of a giant renal leiomyoma (17x15x13 cm) in a 20-year-old female presenting with abdominal discomfort and a palpable mass.
  • Imaging revealed a large, exophytic, solid-cystic mass arising from the upper pole of the left kidney.

Findings:

  • Histologically, renal leiomyomas show intersecting fascicles of spindle cells with actin and desmin immunoreactivity.
  • The large size and complex nature of this tumor were confirmed via CT scan.

Implications:

  • Giant renal leiomyomas, though rare, require surgical intervention due to potential symptoms and diagnostic limitations of biopsy.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering leiomyoma in the differential diagnosis of large renal masses.
