Summary

Simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) imaging can be affected by eye movement artifacts. Changing the phase-encoding direction to right-to-left/left-to-right can minimize these motion-related artifacts in fMRI data.

Background:

  • Simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) imaging accelerates echo-planar imaging (EPI) fMRI acquisition.
  • SMS data are susceptible to motion sensitivity and slice leakage artifacts, particularly from eye movements.
  • Eye movements can cause signal spread within and between slices due to SMS acquisition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate eye movement artifacts in SMS fMRI data.
  • To assess the impact of phase-encoding (PE) direction on the severity of these artifacts.

  • Five healthy adults underwent SMS-EPI fMRI scans during a blinking task.

  • Eye movements introduce significant artifacts in SMS fMRI, influenced by PE direction.
  • Researchers should carefully pilot SMS protocols and consider R≫L/L≫R PE direction to reduce eye motion artifacts.
  • Caution is advised when interpreting SMS fMRI data, especially concerning motion-related artifacts.
