Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between aortic stiffness and cerebral white matter microstructural integrity in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 1484 older adults (mean age 76 years) from the ARIC-NCS.
  • Aortic stiffness measured by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity.
  • White matter integrity assessed using diffusion tensor imaging (fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity).

Main Results:

  • Higher carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity correlated with lower fractional anisotropy and higher mean diffusivity.
  • Elevated aortic stiffness (top 25th percentile) showed significant associations with reduced white matter integrity.
  • Similar associations were found across different brain regions.

Conclusions:

  • Increased aortic stiffness is associated with diminished cerebral white matter microstructural integrity in older individuals.
  • Aortic stiffness represents a potential therapeutic target for preventing age-related white matter decline.
