Most patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) have low vitamin D. Higher vitamin D levels correlate with fewer brain lesions and lower disability scores.

- Patients were categorized into vitamin D deficient (<30 ng/ml) and sufficient (≥30 ng/ml) groups.
Main Results:
- 91% of patients exhibited vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D < 30 ng/ml).
- Patients with sufficient vitamin D levels had significantly lower T2-weighted lesion counts on MRI.
- Higher serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with lower Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores, independent of age, gender, and disease duration.
Conclusions:
- The majority of MS and CIS patients in this cohort were vitamin D deficient.
- Adequate vitamin D levels are associated with reduced MRI-detected disease activity and lower clinical disability in MS.
- These findings support the investigation of vitamin D supplementation as an adjunct therapy in MS management.
