Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Healthcare Team Training
  • Interprofessional Collaboration

Background:

  • Interprofessional education is vital for medical students to foster effective healthcare teams.
  • Implementing interprofessional learning can be challenging in medical curricula.
  • Exposure to diverse professional roles enhances patient care safety and team dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of interprofessional observed structured clinical exams (OSCEs) on medical students' attitudes and values.
  • To assess changes in interprofessional knowledge and teamwork skills among third-year medical students.
  • To determine the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating simulated interprofessional scenarios into medical training.

Main Methods:

  • Two interprofessional case scenarios were integrated into OSCEs for third-year medical students.
  • Allied embedded actors (AEAs) portrayed a social worker and a pharmacy student in distinct scenarios.
  • The Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale (ISVS-21) was used to measure changes in student attitudes pre- and post-simulation, analyzed with paired t-tests.

Main Results:

  • A significant positive change in interprofessional knowledge and attitudes was observed (mean change=1.3, P<.0001).
  • 353 out of 417 medical students completed both pre- and post-surveys.
  • Both students and faculty highly rated the interprofessional OSCE cases.

Conclusions:

  • Integrating interprofessional cases with AEAs into OSCEs is a replicable strategy.
  • This method positively influences students' attitudes and values regarding interprofessional knowledge.
  • The study demonstrates a practical approach to enhancing interprofessional teamwork in medical education.
