Area of Science:

  • Public health
  • Psychiatry
  • Forensic pathology

Background:

  • Accidental deaths among former psychiatric patients require careful classification.
  • Previous studies have focused on suicide and undetermined deaths in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare unusual accidental deaths in former public psychiatric patients with suicide and undetermined death data.
  • To determine if unusual accidents should be grouped with suicides or undetermined deaths for epidemiological analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of unusual accidental death records for former public psychiatric patients over three years in Missouri.
  • Comparison of demographic and diagnostic data between accidental deaths, suicides, and undetermined deaths.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Demographic and diagnostic profiles of undetermined deaths were found to resemble those of suicides.
  • Unusual accidental deaths, excluding those classified as undetermined, did not share similar characteristics with suicides.

Conclusions:

  • Undetermined deaths in former psychiatric patients may be statistically combined with suicides for incidence and prevalence estimations.
  • Other unusual accidental deaths should be analyzed separately from suicides and undetermined deaths due to distinct characteristics.
