    Summary

    We developed a novel fifth-generation (5G) New Radio system using radio over fiber and four-wave mixing for photonic amplification. This system achieves stable 15 dB gain for 4G and 5G signals up to 26 GHz.

    Background:

    • Four-wave mixing (FWM) is a nonlinear optical effect that can be exploited for signal processing and amplification.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and implement a multiband, photonically amplified 5G NR system.
    • To leverage RoF technology and FWM for efficient radio frequency (RF) amplification.
    • To demonstrate the co-existence and joint amplification of 4G and 5G signals in the optical domain.

    Main Methods:

    • Implementation of a 5G NR system utilizing RoF.
    • Stimulation of FWM in a highly nonlinear fiber for photonics-assisted RF amplification.
