Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Summary

Multiple supernumerary teeth, especially mandibular distomolars, are rare in patients without syndromes. Early detection of these rare dental anomalies necessitates ongoing patient observation for optimal management.

Background:

Supernumerary teeth are uncommon, particularly when not associated with genetic syndromes.
While often found in the maxillary region, distomolars (supernumerary teeth located distal to the third molars) are rare.
Mandibular distomolars represent an extremely rare presentation of dental anomalies.

Observation:

This study presents a series of clinical case reports focusing on both maxillary and mandibular distomolars.
The cases highlight the infrequent occurrence and varied presentations of these posterior supernumerary teeth.
Diagnostic imaging and clinical examination were utilized to identify and analyze the distomolars.

Findings:

Distomolars, especially in the mandible, are exceptionally rare dental findings.
The presence of multiple supernumerary teeth without a known syndrome is a rare clinical scenario.
Supernumerary teeth can occur in any dental arch region, with a higher predilection for the maxilla.

Implications:

The rare occurrence of distomolars underscores the importance of thorough dental examinations.
Patients diagnosed with distomolars, regardless of location, require careful monitoring and observation.
Understanding the prevalence and characteristics of rare dental anomalies aids in clinical decision-making and patient care.
