Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Alcoholism is a significant public health concern associated with various negative outcomes.
  • Suicide attempts are a serious complication among individuals with alcohol use disorder.
  • Understanding risk factors for suicide attempts in alcoholics is crucial for prevention and intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between suicide attempts and factors such as parental alcoholism, psychopathology, and drinking history in hospitalized alcoholics.
  • To identify specific clinical characteristics differentiating suicide attempters from non-attempters within an alcoholic population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of a sample of hospitalized alcoholic patients.
  • Assessment of suicide attempt history.
  • Evaluation of parental alcoholism history.
  • Diagnosis and severity assessment of psychopathology.
  • Examination of drinking history, including age of onset and symptom severity.

Main Results:

  • Suicide attempters exhibited a higher prevalence of multiple psychiatric diagnoses, including depression, antisocial personality disorder, and substance abuse.
  • Attempters presented with more severe psychiatric symptoms compared to non-attempters.
  • A parental history of alcoholism was more common among suicide attempters.
  • Early age of alcohol abuse onset was also associated with suicide attempts in this cohort.
  • Acute alcohol abuse symptoms prior to hospitalization did not significantly differ between attempters and non-attempters.

Conclusions:

  • Psychopathology and a family history of alcoholism are significant risk factors for suicide attempts in individuals with alcoholism.
  • Early intervention targeting psychopathology and family history may help reduce suicide risk in alcoholic patients.
  • Further research is needed to explore the complex interplay of these factors and develop effective prevention strategies.
