Glycocalyx and its Functions01:14

Glycocalyx and its Functions

7.5K
The glycocalyx is a carbohydrate-rich, fuzzy-appearing layer on the outer surface of the cell membrane. It is highly hydrophilic, because of this it attracts large amounts of water to the cell's surface. This aids the cell's interaction with the watery environment and also helps it to obtain substances dissolved in the water. It is also important for cell identification, self/non-self determination, and embryonic development and is used in cell-to-cell attachments to form tissues.

Protein Glycosylation01:25

Protein Glycosylation

9.0K
Glycosylation, the most common post-translational modification for proteins, serves diverse functions. Adding sugars to proteins makes the proteins more resistant to proteolytic digestion. Glycosylated proteins can act as markers and receptors to promote cell-cell adhesion. Additionally, they have many essential quality control functions in the cell, such as correct protein folding and facilitating transport of misfolded proteins to the cytosol, which can be degraded.

Proteoglycans01:05

Proteoglycans

4.5K
Glycans, a class of complex heterogeneous molecules, can be covalently attached to proteins to form glycosylated proteins that regulate various physiological and pathological processes. Glycosylated proteins or glycoproteins comprise N-linked and O-linked oligosaccharides. O-glycosylation is the most common type of protein glycosylation. Here, glycans attach to the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl groups of Serine or Threonine residues. O-linked glycosylation occurs later in protein processing,...

Fischer Projections02:18

Fischer Projections

16.0K
Learning to draw Fischer projections of molecules and understanding their relevance plays a crucial role in the visual depiction of organic molecules. A Fischer projection is a two-dimensional projection on a planar surface to simplify the three-dimensional wedge–dash representation of molecules. This is especially helpful in the case of molecules with multiple chiral centers that can be difficult to draw. Here, all the bonds of interest are represented as horizontal or vertical lines. While...

Area of Science:

  • Carbohydrate Chemistry
  • Bioinformatics
  • Computational Biology

Background:

  • Glycan structures are vital in biological processes.
  • Current methods for representing glycans, such as symbols or linear nomenclature (e.g., Consortium for Functional Glycomics), are prone to errors.
  • A lack of user-friendly tools hinders standardized glycan representation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce GlycoGlyph, a novel web application for glycan structure representation.
  • To provide a graphical user interface (GUI) for drawing and inputting glycan structures.
  • To enable dynamic conversion between graphical and linear nomenclature formats.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a JavaScript-based web application named GlycoGlyph.
  • Implementation of a GUI for intuitive glycan structure drawing.
  • Integration of functionality for inputting linear nomenclature and outputting graphical representations.
  • Inclusion of features for saving structures as SVG vector graphics and exporting as GlycoCT.

Main Results:

  • GlycoGlyph offers a GUI for drawing and inputting glycan structures.
  • The tool dynamically generates linear nomenclature from graphical input and vice versa.
  • Users can export glycan structures as SVG files or condensed GlycoCT format.
  • The application is accessible via a web link and functions in modern browsers.

Conclusions:

  • GlycoGlyph addresses the need for a user-friendly tool in glycan structure representation.
  • The application promotes standardized and accurate glycan nomenclature.
  • GlycoGlyph facilitates data sharing and analysis in glycobiology through versatile export options.
