Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Clinical Neuroscience

Background:

  • Schizophrenia presents with diverse symptoms, potentially varying between subtypes.
  • The Exner's Rorschach system offers diagnostic indicators for thought disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate differences in cognitive and affective disturbances between "florid" and "withdrawn" schizophrenia subtypes.
  • To utilize the Exner's Rorschach system to identify specific diagnostic indicators differentiating these subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Rorschach protocols from 45 participants (15 "florid" schizophrenics, 15 "withdrawn" schizophrenics, 15 controls) were analyzed.
  • Exner's indices were used to assess perceptual accuracy, reality testing, emotional control, organizational activity, and ideational production.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Both schizophrenic subtypes exhibited impaired perceptual accuracy, reality testing, and reduced emotional control compared to controls.
  • "Florid" schizophrenics showed significantly poorer perceptual functioning, inadequate organizational activity, and greater disordered ideation than "withdrawn" schizophrenics.

Conclusions:

  • Distinct patterns of cognitive and affective dysfunction exist between "florid" and "withdrawn" schizophrenia subtypes.
  • The Exner's Rorschach system effectively differentiates these subtypes, highlighting specific areas of impairment.
