Summary

Serum platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) levels are lower in lung cancer patients and may aid in diagnosis. Lower PDGF-AA and PDGF-AB/BB levels correlate with improved survival in non-small cell lung cancer patients.

Background:

  • Lung cancer (LC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide.
  • Early diagnosis and accurate prognostication are critical for effective patient management.
  • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is implicated in various cellular processes, including cancer progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the diagnostic and predictive value of serum platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) levels in patients with lung cancer (LC).
  • To assess serum PDGF concentrations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients compared to healthy controls.
  • To evaluate the relationship between serum PDGF levels, therapeutic response, and survival outcomes in NSCLC patients.

Main Methods:

  • Serum concentrations of PDGF-AA and PDGF-AB/BB were quantified using Luminex assay.
  • The study included 210 NSCLC patients, 33 SCLC patients, and 168 healthy controls.
  • PDGF levels were analyzed in relation to cancer diagnosis, platinum-based chemotherapy response, and patient survival.

Main Results:

  • Serum PDGF-AA and PDGF-AB/BB levels were significantly lower in both NSCLC and SCLC patients compared to healthy controls (P < 0.05).
  • Following platinum-based chemotherapy, serum PDGF-AA and PDGF-AB/BB concentrations showed a marked decrease in NSCLC patients (P < 0.05).
  • Higher serum levels of PDGF-AA (≥ 30 ng/mL) and PDGF-AB/BB (≥ 42 ng/mL) were associated with significantly longer median survival times in NSCLC patients (P = 0.0078 and P = 0.0001, respectively).
  • PDGF-AA and PDGF-AB/BB demonstrated strong diagnostic potential for NSCLC with high area under the curve (AUC) values (0.905 and 0.922, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • Serum PDGF may serve as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of NSCLC and SCLC.
  • The findings suggest a role for serum PDGF in predicting treatment response and survival in NSCLC.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the prognostic value of serum PDGF in NSCLC patients with specific mutations and across diverse therapeutic regimens.
