Summary

Early high thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in subacute thyroiditis (SAT) patients predict future hypothyroidism. Thyroid volumes decrease over two years, becoming smaller than healthy controls, especially in those developing hypothyroidism.

Background:

  • Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an inflammatory condition of the thyroid gland.
  • Understanding early indicators and long-term thyroid volume changes in SAT is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify early indicators of hypothyroidism in SAT patients.
  • To track changes in thyroid volume over a two-year follow-up period in SAT patients.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective follow-up study of 61 SAT patients over 2 years.
  • Assessment of hypothyroidism incidence and thyroid volume changes.
  • Statistical analysis using binary logistic regression and ROC curves.

Main Results:

  • Thyroid volumes in SAT patients at 1 and 2 years were significantly smaller than initial volumes and healthy controls.
  • SAT patients who developed hypothyroidism had smaller thyroid volumes.

  • Thyroid volumes in SAT patients initially increase then decrease significantly over two years.
  • Reduced thyroid volumes at 1 and 2 years, particularly in hypothyroid patients, are observed.
  • Early maximum TSH is a reliable predictor for developing hypothyroidism 2 years post-SAT onset.
