  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common, debilitating side effect of cancer treatment with no definitive cures.
  • Exercise is being explored as a potential supportive therapy to manage CIPN and improve patient quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize evidence from high-quality research on the effects of exercise interventions on CIPN and related outcomes.
  • To assess exercise impacts across all age groups receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus) from May 2016 to April 2019.
  • Included studies were clinical trials and meta-analyses, with rigorous bias evaluation using CONSORT guidelines.
  • Thirteen studies (7 RCTs, 6 quasi-experiments) involving adult CIPN populations were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • No studies provided high-quality evidence; two offered moderate-quality evidence.
  • Most interventions (76.3%) combined aerobic, strength, and balance training.
  • Aerobic exercise components were associated with significant, moderate-to-large improvements in CIPN, balance, and fitness.

Conclusions:

  • Evidence for exercise's efficacy in ameliorating CIPN is currently insufficient, particularly from high-quality studies or in pediatric populations.
  • Intervention heterogeneity limits definitive conclusions on optimal exercise protocols.
  • Aerobic exercise appears to be a crucial element for potential CIPN management through exercise.
