Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Technology
  • Laser Surgery

Background:

  • Large epithelial iris cysts pose treatment challenges, especially when anterior walls contact the corneal endothelium.
  • Previous treatments involving surgical decompression and argon laser photocoagulation have numerous complications.

Observation:

  • A new technique involved barraging the posterior wall of iris cysts and surrounding tissue with an argon laser.
  • Subsequent collapse of the cyst was achieved using argon or neodymium-yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) lasers.

Findings:

  • The anterior cyst wall detached from the cornea after collapse and was then photocoagulated.
  • This combined laser approach resulted in no cyst recurrences or adverse effects in four patients during follow-up.

Implications:

  • This noninvasive laser technique offers a promising alternative for managing large iris cysts.
  • The described method may reduce complications associated with traditional surgical interventions.
  • Further adoption of this technique could improve patient outcomes for iris cyst treatment.
